Depending on professional background, experience and family situation, a competitive compensation and benefits package will be offered. The successful applicant will be offered an appointment limited to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL). Any subsequent extension(s) are subject to terms of the Tribunal’s mandate and/or the availability of the funds. The Special Tribunal for Lebanon is an international inter-governmental organization with its own independent legal identity and not a UN organization. However, STL follows the UN common system for benefits and entitlements to its staff members. UN staff members may also serve on loan from their parent department/office, if selected.
The recruitment process may include a pre-selection procedure, written tests and interviews to assess levels of competency.

A roster of suitable candidates may be established for this particular profile as a result of this selection process for both fixed-term established and general temporary assistance posts.

Under the supervision of the Unit Head, the Language Reference Assistant provides the Language Services Section staff and freelance linguists with timely and complete reference materials for their assignments and contributes to and assists in maintaining and optimizing use of the Section’s electronic translation memory, terminology database and document management system. The incumbent will be expected to perform the following duties:

• Analyses documents submitted for translation for previously-translated content and references;

• Source quoted text, titles of publications, organisations, organisational entities, positions, etc. in the target language;

• Identify the significance and where possible target-language equivalent of acronyms, abbreviations, etc.;

• Locate relevant background material when necessary;

• Respond to referencing queries from Language Services Section staff and freelance linguists;

• Liaise with the STL library and in-house specialists when appropriate;

• In the event of unsuspected complexities alert his/her supervisor to the possible impact on deadlines;

• Contribute to the Section’s library of reference materials and collection of (electronic) sources;

• Assist in identifying terminology and producing glossaries; and perform other ad hoc duties, as required.

• Technological Awareness - Good computer skills; excellent command of UN standard computer applications (Windows XP, Word, Access, Lotus Notes, Excel, etc.) ability to harness internet resources, a knowledge of document management systems, computer-assisted translation and terminology systems is desirable.
• Education: High School diploma or equivalent and demonstrated ability to use computer technology.

• Work Experience: At least 5 years of related administrative or language experience.

• Languages: Arabic, English and French are the official languages of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. For this post, an excellent command of English and a very good command of Arabic are required. A command of all three languages is highly desirable. Applicants may be invited to sit a competitive test.

• Other: Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure.
