The successful applicant will be offered a fixed-term appointment of one year duration or until 31 December 2020. Such appointment and any subsequent extension(s) are subject to the terms of the mandate and/or the availability of funds.

A roster of suitable candidates may be established for this particular profile as a result of this selection process for both fixed-term established and general temporary assistance posts. In addition, this selection process and the roster may be used to fill posts at the P-1 grade in the Presidency and Appeals Chamber. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the P-1 grade (an advanced university degree or at least two years relevant work experience in combination with a first-level university degree) are welcome to apply and they may be considered for a post at the P-1 grade

Depending on professional background, experience and family situation, a competitive compensation and benefits package will be offered. The Special Tribunal ("Tribunal") is an international inter-governmental organization with its own independent legal identity and not a UN organization. However, the Tribunal follows the UN common system for benefits and entitlements to its staff members. UN staff members may also serve on loan from their parent department/office, if selected.

The recruitment process may include a pre-selection procedure, written tests and interviews to assess levels of competency.

Assist the Appeals Chambers Judges and Legal Officers in providing specialized legal, judicial and administrative support. Duties include: conducting legal research, particularly in international criminal law and Lebanese substantive and procedural criminal law; preparing legal memoranda; assisting in the drafting of orders and decisions; assisting in assessing briefs and authorities submitted by parties; assisting in managing files of submissions and decisions; monitoring relevant developments in international law; performing other duties as required.

Assist the President Office and Chef de Cabinet in planning, organizing and coordinating judicial and administrative activities in the President's Office. Duties include: assisting in drafting speeches and reports; supporting the President's judicial functions through legal research, particularly on international, criminal and Lebanese law; assisting the preparation of memoranda and decisions for the President; assisting the preparation of plenary sessions of the Tribunal's judges; performing other duties as required.

Knowledge and Skills
Professionalism - Knowledge of procedural and substantive law at either the national or international level; experience in applying legal expertise to a diverse range of complex legal issues; ability to analyse evidence and to conduct comprehensive legal research; proficiency in legal drafting and ability to prepare legal memoranda and opinions under pressure and short deadlines; ability to balance a number of cases and work in an efficient and directed manner; discretion and sound judgment in applying legal expertise to sensitive, complex legal issues; ability to work to tight deadlines and handle multiple concurrent assignments.

Planning and Organising - Ability to establish priorities, coordinate with others and handle a large volume of work in an efficient and timely manner; Ability to foresee risks, allow for contingencies when planning, and monitor and adjust plans as necessary.

Communication - Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ; Ability to listen and demonstrate openness in sharing information and keeping team informed; Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively; Ability to tailor language, tone, style and format to match the audience.

Teamwork - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds with respect for diversity; Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; Willingness to learn from others.
• Education: Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law, preferably with a specialisation in international or criminal law. A first-level university degree in law, preferably with a specialisation international or criminal law, in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

• Work Experience: A minimum of two years (or four years if in possession of a first-level university degree) of progressively responsible experience relevant to the post, preferably a professional legal experience in international law, criminal law, administrative law.

• Languages: Arabic, English and French are the official languages of the STL. For this post, proficiency in either English or French is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an asset.

• Other: Proven ability to conduct comprehensive yet rapid analysis. Knowledge of the functioning of international tribunals is highly desirable.
