Depending on professional background, experience and family situation, a competitive compensation and benefits package will be offered. The successful applicant will be offered a temporary appointment until 31 December 2019 limited to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL). Any subsequent extension(s) are subject to the terms of the Tribunal's mandate and/or the availability of funds. The Special Tribunal for Lebanon is an international inter-governmental organization with its own independent legal identity and not a UN organization. However, STL follows the UN common system for benefits and entitlements to its staff members. UN staff members may also serve on loan from their parent department/office, if selected.

The recruitment process may include a pre-selection procedure, written tests and interviews to assess levels of competency.

A roster of suitable candidates may be established for this particular profile as a result of this selection process for fixed-term general temporary assistance posts.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer of the Language Services Section, the Head of Translation Support Services Unit (TSSU) is responsible for the translation of evidentiary material, predominantly through outsourcing but also through in-house translation, and the delivery of language support services to LSS.

The Head of TSSU leads and manages work within the unit through its internal and external resources. S/he also determines priorities in language support services and ensures delivery of those services in line with the requirements resulting from the judicial proceedings. The incumbent must ensure appropriate quality control through the review of translations and the provision of feedback to both staff and external translators.

The Head of TSSU plans, organizes, supervises and monitors related terminology and reference work of the Unit and directs the conduct of terminological research to consolidate language reference and terminology resources. The incumbent coordinates with Heads of Units and revisers on linguistic issues relevant to terminological activities; advises translators, interpreters, as well as authors, on matters related to terminology and standardisation; ensures accesses to external linguistic resources (external databases and terminology banks), proactively communicates information and advice to LSS clients and other stakeholders that appropriately respond to their specific needs in terminology and other support services of the Unit with full respect for their priorities, and keeps terminology and reference documents up-to-date.

The Head of TSSU is in charge of the language support services infrastructure. S/he optimises the use of LSS computer-assisted translation and terminology software and, in coordination with the Information Services Section, ensures that the support infrastructure, hardware and software, is adequately maintained and upgraded, to meet internal clients' needs, including support to LSS staff based in the Beirut Office.

The incumbent is also responsible for the direct supervision and performance management of 11 staff members in the Translation Support Services Unit, as well as regular on-site contractors, and should perform other duties as required.

• Teamwork - Good interpersonal skills, willingness to share knowledge and encourage cooperation, ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
• Confidentiality – Ability to act with the utmost discretion and to maintain confidentiality as appropriate.
• Technological Awareness – Good computer skills, familiarity with standard computer applications (Windows XP, Word, Access, Lotus Notes, Excel, etc.), ability to harness internet resources. Knowledge of and familiarity with computer-assisted translation and terminology systems and software is highly desirable.
Qualifications
• Education: University degree in languages, translation, law, political sciences, history, administration or other relevant subject. Documented equivalent combination of relevant experience and formal education/training may be considered appropriately.

• Work Experience: At least 7 years of progressively responsible relevant experience, 5 if the candidate holds an advance university degree in one of the abovementioned fields), preferably in the context of the United Nations or an international organisation.

• Languages: Arabic, English and French are the official languages of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. For the post, an excellent command of English is required. A good command of Arabic is a strong asset. A good command of French is an asset.

- Other: Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure; familiarity with research techniques for translators; familiarity with documents management; and specialisation in legal translation is desirable.
